Love & Pride in Alabama
In the spring of 2018 graphics/multimedia editor, Rebecca Lieberman and I sat down to think through how to tell a story about L.G.B.T.Q.+ pride outside of major urban centers. We settled on highlighting Alabama, where L.G.B.T.Q.+ individuals still lack legal protection from discrimination and face significant barriers to marriage and adoption.
I brought photographer Annie Flanagan into the project and we worked out a plan for them to travel through the state for ten days, interviewing and documenting the lives of people they met along the way.
We worked closely with Annie on the final edit and design, and the story won a 2019 Society for News Design Bronze medal for Best of Digital- Gender/Identity & Society.
